On November 2, 2024, Olga Tokarczuk, alongside her translator Karol Lesman, was awarded the European Literature Prize for her novel Empusion (published by De Geus). The award ceremony took place at the Crossing Border festival, held in the striking setting of the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, marking a significant achievement for both author and translator.
The night before, on November 1, we had the privilege of attending An Evening with Olga Tokarczuk at the historic Aula of the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam. Tokarczuk captivated the audience, sharing her thoughts on the magic of storytelling, her commitment to giving voice to nature, and the critical role of the translator. She praised Lesman’s skill in capturing the essence of her intricate language in Dutch, reflecting how translation, at its best, is an art of profound empathy.
Tokarczuk also took an unexpected turn, exploring the potential of literature within the world of gaming. She envisioned how interactive storytelling could open new doors for readers, allowing them to experience the narrative in dynamic, immersive ways that bring fiction to life.
The evening was an inspiring celebration of Tokarczuk’s work and an exciting glimpse into the future of literature as it intersects with technology.
